An Evening at Albany-Saratoga Speedway

MALTA — The moment you enter the parking area of Albany-Saratoga Speedway, the thunderous roar and palpable vibrations of racecars practicing their‍ laps envelop you.

As you approach the entrance, you can see children perched on their fathers’ shoulders, trying to catch a sneak peek⁤ of⁣ the track. Some kids dash towards the pit fence, their eyes wide with excitement as⁣ they watch drivers‌ and crew members fine-tuning their⁣ cars for another exhilarating‌ Friday night race at the ⁤Route 9 track.

This family-centric tradition has⁢ been a part of the community ‌for over half a century. However, it is now ⁤under threat due to new ⁤housing development pressures ⁢that emerged ⁢earlier this year.

Albany-Saratoga Speedway could be transformed into a 700-unit housing⁣ development under a new proposal

With the future of the track hanging in the balance, I decided ‍to visit the⁤ speedway this weekend to immerse myself ‍in ‍the vibrant sights, sounds, and flavors while they still exist.

Prior to my visit, I delved into the‌ rich history of ‍the venue and ⁣the potential sale that could transform the 50-acre racing facility ⁤into a 700-unit housing complex, ⁢complete with ⁣retail shops and other public amenities.

Armed with the knowledge ‍of the⁣ Speedway’s past and its uncertain future, I set‌ out to experience the thrill of the Friday night races, ⁣which could ⁢potentially be one of the last.

When I first received this assignment from my editor, I was taken aback. To be ⁤completely honest, I was unaware of‌ the existence of a speedway in Malta.

It was‌ a‌ bit of a surprise, considering⁤ I have been⁤ covering⁤ sports in Saratoga Springs ⁤for almost ⁢five⁤ years.

As I delved deeper into the assignment, I was captivated by the Speedway’s rich history ‍and traditions.⁤ It⁤ also made me reflect on my own experiences as a casual race fan during my childhood.

For context, ‍I grew up downstate and would often attend auto races at the Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown every summer. The⁤ most ‍memorable race from my childhood was a NASCAR event at Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania‌ during a family vacation.

It had been over a decade since I last attended an auto race.

As I drove into the expansive parking area of the Speedway, the sounds and vibrations of the ongoing practice sessions ⁤grew more intense. The smell of exhaust filled⁣ the air as I got closer to the track.

Inside, children were ⁤rushing to the⁣ grandstands for a better view of the track, while others were deciding⁢ on their snack‌ choices from the concession ⁣stands.

Corn dogs and french fries seemed to be the crowd favorites.

Even though the races were ⁤not due to start for another hour, the public address system was buzzing with updates about the ⁢current driver‍ standings and the night’s racing schedule.

One of the announcers reminded the crowd that the racing season was nearing ⁣its end, and there wouldn’t be many more chances⁢ to enjoy the Speedway’s famous french fries or shop⁢ for holiday gifts for ‌racing enthusiasts. Despite the looming threat of closure, there ⁤was ⁢no mention of it on ⁢Friday. It was just another exciting night at the‌ races.

As the clock ‌neared 7 ⁢p.m., families and friends settled into their spots in the grandstands, which were soon filled to capacity. When the first race began, the area behind the grandstands was almost empty ‍– everyone was eagerly awaiting the‍ start of the races.

It was during the first race ⁢that I realized my wardrobe choice ‌for the⁣ evening was a mistake. ⁢I learned the hard way that wearing ⁣white to a dirt track is not ‍a⁤ good idea, as⁤ by the end of the night, it was covered in⁢ dust. As ‌the races progressed and‌ more cars joined the track, the amount of dirt flying around increased.

While many spectators came prepared with earplugs or noise-canceling headphones, I was more ‌concerned about ‍the dirt getting into my eyes than the noise.

However, this didn’t seem ⁤to bother the other spectators, as the stands remained packed until the races ended around‍ 10 p.m.

The crowd cheered for ⁣their favorite⁢ drivers by name, maintaining‌ a⁤ family-friendly‌ atmosphere throughout.⁤ Even when a fan in my section became upset over a caution flag, others quickly‌ reminded ⁣him to mind his language as there were children present.

About an hour⁤ into the races, when I went ⁣to grab a snack, ⁢the concourse was still almost deserted. The only‍ exceptions were a few children playing tag under the ⁣stands ⁤and some adults taking a⁣ smoke break.

I decided to follow the announcer’s recommendation and ordered the much-praised french fries.

Despite⁣ the dust,⁢ I thoroughly enjoyed the competitive spirit ⁤of⁣ the races. I watched as drivers built a lead, only for it to be erased by a caution, forcing them to ⁤start all over again.

The⁢ most exciting race‌ for me was in the limited sportsman division, where Colton Emigh clinched ⁣his first ⁣career win. In the thrilling 20-lap race, Emigh ‌lost the‌ lead early⁣ on to Jordan Hill, but managed to ‌regain it. In the end, Emigh held off Lucas ⁤Duncan, earning a ⁤trip to victory lane.

One thing that struck me throughout‌ the ⁣night was the number of young drivers competing at⁢ Albany-Saratoga Speedway. Perhaps a decade or so ago,⁤ they were the ones munching on corn dogs in the grandstands, and now they’re⁢ racing on the track.

The Speedway has provided a⁢ platform for young⁣ drivers to chase‍ their⁣ dreams⁣ of auto racing and for seasoned drivers to stay in shape. It has been a staple⁣ in the Capital Region, offering a place for families and friends to gather on ⁢summer Friday nights and providing job ⁢opportunities for those looking for extra income.

Without ⁢a doubt, the Albany-Saratoga Speedway will be ⁢sorely missed if it ceases to exist.
