SHANGHAI — In the bustling city of Shanghai, China’s Ministry of Commerce made a compelling statement on Saturday. The vice minister of commerce, Wang Shouwen, expressed that the United States should view the modern, populous China as an opportunity rather than a threat. This statement was made amidst ongoing trade discussions taking place in the city of Tianjin.
The dialogue, which was co-chaired by U.S. Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade Marisa Lago, marks the second meeting this year between the two officials. These discussions are happening against the backdrop of escalating trade tensions between the two global powers.
Earlier in the week, China’s commerce ministry had urged the United States to eliminate all tariffs on Chinese goods. This request came just before the Biden administration’s anticipated announcement of increased levies on a range of Chinese-manufactured items, including electric vehicles.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Chinese ministry described the talks as “professional, rational, and pragmatic.” The discussions focused on policy and business issues raised by the business communities of both nations.
The statement further highlighted China’s focus on expressing concerns about issues such as U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods. It also emphasized China’s opposition to the implementation of trade and investment restrictions under the guise of overcapacity.
Agree China’s market can offer many opportunities for the US if approached wisely.
