Section 2 Football: Gloversville Fends Off Amsterdam to Secure 28-24 Victory in Season Opener

GLOVERSVILLE — In a thrilling debut⁤ for Ryan‍ Mulligan as the new head coach of⁢ the⁢ Gloversville Huskies varsity football team, the squad was resolute in securing⁢ a win.

In a​ nail-biting encounter​ against​ Amsterdam on Friday night, Gloversville managed to hold off the Rams, clinching a 28-24 victory in the Week ​0 non-classification ​matchup.

The game remained scoreless until the final moments of the first quarter, when Amsterdam’s‌ quarterback ​Luis Tirado connected with Rocco Natale Jr., who was ​unmarked in the middle of ​the field. Natale‍ Jr. completed ​the play with ‍a 73-yard touchdown reception.

Gloversville responded in the second quarter, with quarterback Caelan Porter diving in for a ⁣touchdown at‌ the goal line, ⁣giving the Huskies a 7-6 lead.

However, ‍Amsterdam was not‍ done yet.

Late in the second quarter, Tirado linked up with Jose Cruz for ⁣a 68-yard touchdown pass, allowing the Rams to regain the lead at 12-7.

Undeterred, Gloversville utilized the remaining time in the quarter, marching down the field to score on a four-yard completion‌ from Porter to ⁤Quegan Bier, taking ‌a 13-12 lead.

The Huskies extended their lead in⁢ the third quarter, when⁣ Ezequiel ​Santiago​ caught a‍ 21-yard​ touchdown pass⁢ from Porter.

The Rams,​ however, kept the pressure on, with Cruz ​and⁣ Tirado connecting for⁢ another impressive touchdown​ pass, this time for 36 yards at the end of the third quarter.

In the final quarter, Gloversville increased their lead ⁤when Porter ‌ran in a ⁢nine-yard touchdown. Despite Amsterdam adding ⁤one more score ⁢on a 3-yard run by Tirado, making the score 28-24, time was‍ not ​on ⁣their side to make up ⁢the rest of⁣ the deficit.

Porter had an impressive⁣ game for Gloversville, completing 16 of 26 passes for 222 yards. He scored four touchdowns, two through the air and two on the ground.

Braydon Deere contributed 134 rushing yards for ⁣the⁣ Huskies, while⁣ Santiago had 89 receiving yards.

For Amsterdam, Tirado ⁢completed 8 of 10⁣ passes for 253 ⁤yards. He scored three touchdowns and threw one interception.

Amsterdam ⁤(0-1 overall)⁣ will host ​South Glens Falls next Friday at 7 p.m.,‍ while Gloversville (1-0‌ overall) will visit Broadalbin-Perth at 7:30 p.m.
