SCHENECTADY — The prestigious title of New York’s 2025 Teacher of the Year has been bestowed upon a dedicated educator from Hamilton Elementary. This remarkable achievement also positions her as the state’s nominee for the esteemed national award.
Colleen Keough, a second-grade teacher at Schenectady’s Hamilton Elementary, has been recognized for her exceptional contributions to education. Her journey began 16 years ago as a first-grade teacher at Paige Elementary School. Since then, she has taught second and fourth grades at Hamilton Elementary, earning the district’s Teacher of the Year award in 2024.
Keough’s outstanding work was celebrated in Albany on Tuesday by the state Board of Regents and the New York State United Teachers union. Schenectady Superintendent Carlos Cotto highlighted that this is the third time in half a century that a Schenectady teacher has received this distinguished honor.
“Schenectady is home to many extraordinary educators, and Colleen Keough is a shining example of the caliber of teachers we have in our district,” Cotto said on Tuesday. “Her unwavering commitment, her ability to foster meaningful relationships with students, families, and the community, and her inspiring work ethic truly set her apart. The positive impact she has on her students is palpable.”
In 2023, Keough was honored with the district’s Passionate Educator Award. She played a pivotal role in establishing a parent-teacher organization at Hamilton Elementary and currently serves as its co-president. Under her leadership, the Hamilton PTO has set up a free library within the school.
“Colleen is highly respected among her peers across our district,” Cotto said. “With this latest recognition, her influence will extend across the state and potentially the nation. She is a source of inspiration and motivation, embodying the true essence of teaching as a vocation. She is a proud representative of our district and the commendable work of her colleagues.”
As the recipient of this annual award, Keough will now represent New York teachers on a larger stage and compete for the national Teacher of the Year award, which is presented each spring.
“Colleen Keough has consistently demonstrated an extraordinary level of dedication to her students, their families, and the Schenectady school community throughout her career,” state Education Commissioner Betty Rosa said in a statement. “She creates a nurturing environment where students feel safe and supported, ensuring their physical, emotional, and academic needs are met. She also plays a crucial role in uniting the community during challenging times. I am immensely proud of Colleen, the other finalists, and all of New York’s exceptional educators who tirelessly support our public school students every day.”
Within the Schenectady district, Keough is an active member of several committees, including the district Safety Team, Anti-Racism Building Leadership Team, and School Comprehensive Improvement Plan committee.
“This is a monumental achievement for our district, and we couldn’t be prouder of Colleen and her contributions to education in Schenectady,” Cotto said.
