ATLANTA — This week, the southeastern United States witnessed the grand finale of the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square’s tour, which was nothing short of spectacular.
The choir’s performance at the State Farm Arena, located in the heart of Atlanta, was made even more memorable with the surprise appearance of Broadway sensation and actress, Kristin Chenoweth. Her entrance on stage was met with a thunderous standing ovation from the thousands of spectators present.
“Greetings, Atlanta!” Chenoweth exclaimed, her face lit up with joy.
Chenoweth, who has previously shared the stage with the Tabernacle Choir, including at their 2018 Christmas concert, performed a heartfelt rendition of “Angels Among Us”. This was a tribute marking the 23rd anniversary of the tragic 9/11 terror attacks.
Chenoweth’s powerful performance of “How Great Thou Art” was so moving that it brought the audience to their feet in applause.
The Wednesday concert marked the end of the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square’s “Hope” tour, which spanned across Florida and Georgia. In Georgia, the choir continued their collaboration with the glee clubs of Morehouse College and Spelman College, two historically Black colleges based in Atlanta.
The choir and the glee clubs first performed together in Salt Lake City last year during the broadcast of “Music and the Spoken Word”. This year, the choir from Utah traveled to Georgia to join the glee club singers in their home state for a memorable performance.
The audience at State Farm Arena gave multiple standing ovations to the African American choirs, who performed energetic and heartfelt renditions of songs like “I Ain’t Got Weary Yet” and “Children Go Where I Send Thee.”
This was the second time in three days that the Tabernacle Choir had the opportunity to perform with the glee clubs from Morehouse and Spelman in Atlanta. They had previously put on a concert on Monday evening at the Martin Luther King, Jr. International Chapel on the Morehouse campus.
On Wednesday morning, the Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square also performed at the Georgia State Capitol during a ceremony commemorating 9/11.
The choir leaders have expressed that the aim of this tour was to spread unity and hope. Judging by the enthusiastic response from the crowd on Wednesday night, who repeatedly expressed their approval throughout the two-hour concert, it’s safe to say they achieved their goal.
