Jim Burton’s enthusiasm for bowling is nothing short of extraordinary.
Despite a recent injury to his right bicep that has slowed him down, 82-year-old Burton continues to bowl throughout the year and remains a formidable competitor in his two leagues at Town ’N Country Lanes and various tournaments. With the assistance of Jeff Segel, a seasoned scratch bowler and tournament organizer, Burton is now more recognized for managing the highly popular Amateur League Bowlers Association of New York, a monthly tour for bowlers with averages of less than 215.
The season opener for his A.L.B.A.N.Y. tour is set for Sunday at 9:30 a.m. at Uncle Sam Lanes in Troy. Only members of the organization with established averages are eligible for this event, a unique 3-6-9 tournament that awards free strikes to everyone in those specific frames.
“My father ran a 3-6-9 tournament fifty years ago, and I remembered that,” Burton recalled. “Most of the proprietors have that program in their computers, so I thought it would be a good idea to bring that back. I like to mix things up for our members every now and then. I’ve organized a no-tap tournament before and also a doubles tournament with a twist.”
The Burton name has a long-standing association with local bowling history, as Jim’s father was George Burton, the long-serving executive director of the Northeast Bowling Proprietors of New York. George Burton managed the highly popular Match Game Championships, which used to be the local qualifier for the U.S. Open. He was also a beat writer for the New York Yankees, and Jim had the chance to meet the likes of “Moose” Skowron, Yogi Berra, Enos Slaughter and manager Casey Stengel during his youth.
Burton eventually relocated to the bowling hub of Detroit and lived there for most of his life before returning to the Capital Region to be near his remaining family members.
“I’m still a massive baseball fan, and I’m still a die-hard Yankees fan,” he said. “I watch the Yankees on TV, but I’ll also watch the Detroit Tigers when they are on. I’m not the kind of Yankees fan who is World Series or nothing. I enjoy the journey more than the destination.”
That’s how he feels about bowling, too.
“I adore the game of bowling so much that I’ll do whatever I can to stay involved,” he stated. “That’s why Jeff and I organize these tournament events — to be around the game and try to inspire people to compete, especially those who don’t think they are tournament bowlers. Our organization gives those bowlers a taste of what it’s like to compete in tournament conditions. I would say that 95% of them discovered that they really enjoy it once they give it a try.
“It’s the competition that’s the key. What I call ‘regular’ bowlers don’t compete just to win some money. They enjoy the opportunity, and I find that to be the case across all the averages of our members. That’s why we don’t pay a huge amount on top. We pay a lot deeper than many other tournaments, so more people get to cash and feel like they’ve achieved something special.”
Even though Burton was a longtime scratch bowler, he understands that handicap bowlers outnumber their more skilled counterparts by a significant margin, especially in the Capital Region.
“When I was living in Detroit, you could find a league where all the teams could come in with entering averages between 950 and 1,025. We could get 32 teams without any problem,” he explained. “But around here, it’s not as large of an area and there simply aren’t that many competitive leagues for scratch players.”
When Burton first came to the Capital Region, he ran the New Era Senior Tour, a scratch tournament for seniors with age-bracketed divisions.
“We would get 50 bowlers in the beginning, but then it got down to 30-35 per event,” Burton said. “But I remembered when I first came to this area that Morris Cramer told me if we could find a way to get a tournament for handicap bowlers we could draw from a much larger group. When the Huck Finn TV tournament series stopped, Jeff Segel and I thought about starting the A.L.B.A.N.Y. series.”
Burton said his numbers started out around 88 bowlers per tournament.
“Now, we’re between 65-75, although we have 85 members with established averages,” he explained.
Burton charges a $50 entry fee per event, but you pay only $40 if you get your entry in by the early deadline, usually the Monday before the tournament. There is also a $20 membership fee. Handicap is 100% of 215, with a maximum of 75 pins per game.
The rest of the schedule includes a doubles event on Oct. 20 at Town ‘n Country Lanes, Nov. 10 at Uncle Sam Lanes, Dec. 8 at KPA Latham, another doubles event at Sportsman’s Bowl on Jan. 5, two members-only bonus events in February, March 30 at Sportsman’s Bowl and May 4 at KPA Latham for the “Main Event” season ender.
Burton, known for his one-step approach on the lanes, still enjoys giving bowling lessons on Fridays at Town ’N Country Lanes. His mother, Marge, was the one who taught him how to bowl, and she helped him refine his game for many years after that. He’s taught many area bowlers, especially seniors or players with physical challenges, that same one-step delivery. But he said he’s been struggling a bit with his own game.
“I was averaging 215 before I got hurt. Now, I’m down to about 195,” he lamented. “What I found out is that each year is more like three or four as far as the physical aging part.”
He’s rolled 28 perfect games and owns a high triple of 826.
“I bowled that triple within the first six months I moved here. It was in the Blizzard Bowl at Boulevard Bowl,” Burton noted.
Burton’s highest averages were between 230-233 in a couple of seasons at the now defunct Sunset Lanes.
“I didn’t throw my first perfect game until I was in my late 40s, but I’ve thrown at least one 300 in my 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s,” he said. “I’d like to get at least one more.”
Burton added that he struggles with his speed these days as he’s lost a bit of zip on his delivery due to his arm injury.
“Years ago, the game of bowling involved more physical adjustments. Now, you need more knowledge of equipment and ball motion,” Burton said. “It’s more of a science now. You have to know which ball to use and when to change. I think hitting the pocket has become easier, but carrying strikes might be harder sometimes.
“But I’m not going to give up. I still love this game and will do anything I can to stay physically able to bowl.”
