NEW YORK — As the second Monday of October rolls around, ‌the United States gears up to honor Indigenous Peoples Day, alternatively known as Columbus Day.

Indigenous Peoples Day is a celebration of the rich heritage and significant contributions of the original inhabitants ⁣of America, who were present long before Christopher Columbus mistakenly declared he had discovered the continent. In 2021, President Joe Biden officially acknowledged Indigenous Peoples Day by signing a proclamation that highlighted the historical federal policies that “systematically sought to assimilate and displace Native people and eradicate ⁢Native cultures.”

While some states have officially adopted Indigenous Peoples Day as a holiday, others⁤ acknowledge it through proclamations. Over 100 cities have chosen to replace Columbus Day entirely with Indigenous Peoples Day.

Many students⁣ nationwide will enjoy a day off from ⁢school, although⁢ some may still have classes. Other professionals may ‌also observe the ‍holiday with a day off. For those ⁤who have tasks to complete or errands to run, here’s a rundown of what’s open and what’s closed.

Banks

As Monday is a Federal Reserve bank holiday, most‌ banks will be ⁣closed. However, the financial markets will remain active — both Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange will be open for trading.

Among the major U.S. banks, branches⁤ of Bank of America, Wells‍ Fargo, and Citibank ⁣will be closed.

On the⁢ other hand, Chase Bank and TD Bank will remain open for Indigenous Peoples Day.

Remember, online banking and ATM services are always available for⁢ your banking needs.

Mail

The United States Postal Service ‌will be closed and will not deliver mail‌ or packages.

However, if you have urgent mail to send, UPS and FedEx will be ⁤mostly operating as usual. FedEx Express and FedEx Ground Economy will have modified service, while UPS will‍ operate ‍as normal.

Retail

Most major‍ retailers, including Target, Walmart, and Kroger, will be open for⁤ business.

Government Institutions

Being a government holiday, all government buildings will be closed. This ‍includes the Department of Motor Vehicles, libraries, courts, ‍and offices.
