SCHENECTADY — Ellis Medicine is set to relocate fifty of its finance department employees to a downtown Schenectady office space, as part of its ongoing transition from its McClellan campus. This move follows the sale of the former St. Clare’s Hospital to private developers in August.
The announcement was made on Monday, stating that the employees will be moving to the Center City building on State Street. Ellis Medicine already has 100 employees working at the downtown MVP Building.
The former St. Clare’s site was sold to developers Jeff Buell and Chris Spraragen in August. Currently, Schenectady County and the city are seeking $1.5 million in state funding for a project to transform the former hospital into a 250-unit apartment complex.
Despite the transition, Ellis Medicine will continue to operate its Belanger School of Nursing at the McClellan Street complex. Additionally, two medical office buildings on the campus will remain open.
The relocation of the 50 finance department employees from McClellan Street to a 10,000-square-foot space at Center City is scheduled for Dec. 9.
“Our move to Downtown Schenectady signifies our investment in the city’s ongoing revitalization and our commitment to actively participate in its growth,” said Ellis President & CEO Paul Milton. “This relocation not only improves our employees’ work environment but also immerses them in the vibrant culture of downtown, where they can contribute to the local economy by shopping, dining, and enjoying all the city has to offer.”
This relocation is part of a larger trend that has seen Ellis Medicine transfer multiple services from the McClellan Street campus to Ellis Hospital and Bellevue Woman’s Center in recent years. The company has stated that these moves are aimed at optimizing staffing coverage and enhancing efficiency.
“This move is a strategic step for Ellis Medicine, not only in the transition off the McClellan campus but also in supporting the broader economic development efforts of our community,” said Ellis Chief Financial Officer Marc Mesick.
The move to the Center City office space was made possible by the Schenectady Metroplex Development Authority and the Galesi Group, the landlord of the downtown property.
“We are excited to welcome Ellis Medicine’s team to the heart of our city,” said Mayor Gary McCarthy. “This move underscores the progress we’ve made in making Downtown Schenectady a destination.”
The City Council was expected to approve a resolution during its Monday night meeting supporting an application from Metroplex and the city for $1.5 million in Restore NY grant funding for the proposed apartment complex at the former St. Clare’s location.
If the funding is secured, the $50 million project is expected to open in 2026 or 2027, featuring apartments and a daycare center.
I agree with this decision to move the finance workers to downtown Schenectady. It will help stimulate the local economy and create a more vibrant downtown area.
I agree with this decision #supportlocalbusinesses
