Cobleskill-Richmondville wrestling team barely beats Fonda/Johnstown

JOHNSTOWN — In an electrifying start to the season,‍ the ‍Cobleskill-Richmondville wrestling ⁤team clinched a nail-biting victory against Fonda/Johnstown in their first dual meet⁣ on Thursday.

The match was​ a thrilling rollercoaster ⁣ride, with the lead changing hands multiple times. ⁤However, the Bulldogs, the ⁤current Section 2 Division 2 ‌champions, managed to edge‍ out their opponents with ‍a 37-36 win.

The match kicked ‍off with Rhojan Monfor⁣ for Cobleskill-Richmondville at 215 points, securing a third-period pin. Jake LeSage then took the baton at 285 points, ‍scoring a 12-2 major ⁣decision‌ win over Fonda/Johnstown’s Drake‍ Vanvalkenburgh.

As the match ⁣moved to the 101-pound division,​ Anthony Scolarop recorded a swift 43-second pin, ​giving the⁤ Bulldogs a‌ strong start with victories in the first three matches.

Fonda/Johnstown⁢ started to claw back with a forfeit at ​108 pounds, and Trenton Lawyer’s first-period pin at ‌116 pounds. Steven Swartout then secured a second-period‌ pin at 124 pounds, giving his team a​ narrow⁣ 18-16‌ lead.

Cobleskill-Richmondville wrestled back control of ⁢the match with a forfeit win at 131 pounds. Ashten⁤ Haley then ‍sailed to a tech fall victory at 138, extending the Bulldogs’ ⁢lead to ‌27-18.

However, Fonda/Johnstown wasn’t ready to throw ‍in the towel. ⁣They won the next two matches, with⁣ Johnny Swartout recording an injury decision at 145 ‍pounds, and Kury ⁣Phenes securing a⁣ third-period ‌pin at 152⁤ pounds.

With just ⁤three matches left,⁤ Fonda/Johnstown held a ⁤slim 30-27 lead.

The turning point of the⁤ dual meet was the⁢ 160-pound matchup between Cobleskill-Richmondville’s ​Ben Yorke and Fonda/Johnstown’s Matt Livingston. Despite Livingston’s early 9-1 lead, Yorke ‍staged a remarkable comeback.

The Bulldog senior managed ⁢a reversal, followed by five nearfalls, to secure⁣ a 22-9‍ major ⁣decision. The four team points from Yorke’s win were crucial in ⁢Cobleskill-Richmondville’s overall victory.

With a slim 31-30 lead, Kyber Henry clinched the win for the​ Bulldogs with a‌ 41-second pin at 170 pounds.

Despite​ Fonda-Fultonville’s Colin Pickering picking up‌ a forfeit win at 190 pounds, ⁣Cobleskill-Richmondville had done just enough ⁢to secure the 37-36 team win.
