WASHINGTON — In a surprising turn of events, President Donald Trump decided to indefinitely extend the ceasefire with Iran on Tuesday. This decision came just hours before the truce was due to end, allowing the two nations to carry on with their peace talks aimed at putting an end to a war that has claimed thousands of lives and destabilized the global economy.
In a social media post, Trump revealed that he had agreed to a request by Pakistan, the mediator of the peace talks, “to refrain from attacking Iran until their leaders and representatives can present a unified proposal.”
Trump further clarified that the ceasefire, which commenced two weeks ago, would be extended until Iran’s “proposal is submitted, and discussions are concluded, one way or the other.”
This marks yet another instance of Trump retracting his frequent threats to bomb power plants and other civilian infrastructure in Iran. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, among others, has stated that international humanitarian law prohibits such attacks.
There was no immediate response from Iran, Israel, or Pakistan.
Trump, who initiated the war on Iran with Israel on Feb. 28, stated that he chose to extend the ceasefire because “the Government of Iran is seriously fractured, not unexpectedly so,” referring to the U.S.-Israeli assassinations of some of Iran’s leaders, including the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has been succeeded by his son.
Trump also stated that he would maintain the U.S. Navy’s blockade of Iran’s ports and shore, which Iran’s leaders have labeled as an act of war. This blockade became a contentious issue as the two countries debated this week on whether to send negotiators to a second round of peace talks in Islamabad, the Pakistani capital.
The extension of the ceasefire was announced just a few hours after Trump had expressed his reluctance to continue the temporary truce, stating that the military was “raring to go.” In an interview with CNBC, he asserted that the U.S. was in a strong negotiating position and would secure what he termed “a great deal.”

Disagree with prolonging the truce
Agree – It’s important to maintain diplomacy and avoid unnecessary conflicts.
Good – agree – It’s a wise decision to maintain peace and avoid escalation.
