Walmart Incorporates Subway Meals into its 30-Minute Delivery Service Amidst Intensifying E-commerce Competition

BENTONVILLE, Ark. —‍ Walmart is stepping up its game in the fast-delivery service sector by incorporating Subway meals into its offerings. Customers can now ⁢order meals​ from the popular sandwich⁣ chain through the Walmart app, marking another significant stride in the retailer’s ⁢e-commerce expansion amidst a highly competitive ‍market.

Subway holds the title of being Walmart’s biggest in-store restaurant tenant. Walmart announced on Thursday ⁣that it intends to broaden ⁤the fast-delivery⁢ service‌ for Subway, which is already operational​ in several states, to approximately 1,400⁣ stores ⁢by the ⁢end of summer.

This​ move could ​potentially⁣ mark the start of a more extensive ⁢initiative.

“Subway is an excellent initial step… but our ultimate goal is to ensure that all our in-tenant locations offer delivery via‍ express,” stated Tracy Poulliot, Walmart’s ⁤Executive​ Vice President of‌ U.S. e-commerce and marketing,‍ during the annual⁣ Associates ​Week‌ event.

Walmart, a retail powerhouse, ⁣is in a heated battle‌ with e-commerce behemoth Amazon for delivery supremacy. The ⁤company has been experimenting with⁣ drone delivery and AI-powered ‌technology overhauls to manage inventory, as demand surges among wealthier customers.

Walmart utilizes its network of over 4,600 stores to fulfill online deliveries. Earlier⁣ this year, it extended its 30-minute ⁢delivery option for groceries⁢ and other items to⁤ approximately 33 cities.

During a meeting ‌with Wall ⁣Street analysts in May, Walmart CFO‌ John David Rainey ​revealed​ that‍ store-fulfilled delivery had seen a more than twofold ⁤increase over​ the past two years, ‌with⁤ the​ option becoming the fastest-growing as consumers ⁤increasingly prioritize ‌convenience.

This development comes⁣ amidst a growing economic divide in ⁤the United States, ⁢with lower-income households, once Walmart’s primary consumer base, reducing spending across the​ board.

Since 2004, Subway⁤ has been‍ available in-store at ‌Walmart’s ‍supercenters. Other fast-food chains like Taco Bell, McDonald’s, ⁢and⁤ Wendy’s also have a presence in Walmart stores, along with several ‌regional operators such as Auntie Anne’s.
