SCHENECTADY – A routine traffic stop in Schenectady last week led to the discovery of drugs and a stolen concrete figurine, according to a statement released by the New York State Police on Tuesday.
The incident escalated into a brief foot chase before the driver was apprehended, the police report stated.
The driver, identified as Ricky G. Rickson, 53, a resident of Schenectady, was subsequently arrested and charged with multiple offenses, police said. These include two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, among other charges.
The traffic stop occurred just before 5 p.m. last Thursday on State Street in Schenectady due to a vehicle and traffic law violation, according to the police.
Upon stopping the vehicle, troopers found that Rickson was driving without a valid license. When confronted, Rickson attempted to escape on foot but was swiftly apprehended with the help of the Schenectady Police Department.
Upon searching the vehicle, troopers discovered multiple controlled substances and drug paraphernalia, the police report stated.
Interestingly, they also found a “large concrete figurine” inside the vehicle, which had been reported stolen from a Schenectady residence on February 19, according to the police.
In addition to the aforementioned charges, Rickson is also facing charges of second-degree criminally using drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration, manufacturing drug-related paraphernalia, four counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, and vehicle and traffic law violations.
Following his arrest, Rickson was processed and held for arraignment. The stolen figurine was confiscated and is set to be returned to its rightful owner.
