WASHINGTON — In the wake of his unprecedented conviction by a New York jury, Donald Trump has stated that he would be willing to endure house arrest or even imprisonment. However, he expressed doubts about the public’s ability to accept such a scenario.
“The public may find it hard to swallow,” the likely Republican presidential nominee shared with Fox News in a Sunday interview. “It could be a bitter pill for them to swallow. There’s a limit to what people can bear.”
Trump refrained from speculating on the potential consequences if that limit is breached. His sentencing is set for July 11, just four days before the Republican party convenes to officially select their presidential candidate to challenge Democratic President Joe Biden in the upcoming November election.
When questioned about how Trump’s supporters should react if he were to be incarcerated, Lara Trump, Co-Chair of the Republican National Committee, advised CNN: “They should continue doing what they’ve always done - stay composed and express their dissent at the voting booth on November 5th. The best course of action is to make their opposition heard loud and clear.”
Trump has leveraged his conviction to bolster his fundraising efforts, but has not made any attempts to rally his supporters, unlike his remarks following his 2020 defeat to Biden which incited a fatal assault on the U.S. Capitol by his followers on January 6, 2021.
In response to the verdict, some Trump supporters have displayed U.S. flags in an inverted position. This act of flipping the flag has been a sign of distress or protest in America for over two centuries.
According to Lara Trump, the RNC and the Trump campaign amassed $70 million in the two days following the verdict, a claim that Reuters could not independently confirm. When asked about the allocation of these funds between legal expenses and campaign costs, she chose not to comment.
One Democratic legislator voiced concerns on Sunday about the possibility of a violent backlash from Trump’s supporters in response to his conviction.
“His followers heed his words. They don’t pay attention to Lara Trump. This is yet another perilous incitement to violence,” Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., warned CNN.
However, U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Trump supporter, insisted that any reaction must be within the bounds of the law.
“We are the party of law and order — disorder is not a conservative principle. We have to resist, and we will do so with all our might. But we will do so within the framework of the law,” Johnson stated on “Fox News Sunday.”
Trump has pledged to challenge his conviction by the New York jury, which found him guilty on 34 felony charges related to falsifying documents to conceal a payment made to silence a porn star prior to the 2016 election.
The issue is unlikely to be settled before the November presidential election, where he aims to reclaim the White House from Biden. Polls indicate a tight race between the two and suggest that his conviction could negatively impact his standing with some Republican voters and independents.
Trump’s lawyer, Will Scharf, told ABC News’ “This Week” that he does not anticipate Trump to “face any sentence whatsoever” and plans to eventually bring the case before the Supreme Court.
Trump is also dealing with three other criminal cases, two of which are related to alleged attempts to overturn his 2020 defeat. However, these are not expected to go to trial or conclude before the election. He denies any wrongdoing in all the cases and has labeled the charges as a Democratic plot to hinder his candidacy.
On the other hand, Biden has been defending the integrity of the nation’s justice system, stating that it is “reckless” and “dangerous” to label the verdict as ”rigged.” The U.S. Justice Department refutes any claims of political meddling.
“There’s one candidate who is championing the rule of law, upholding our democratic institutions, safeguarding our Constitution, defending our democracy and that’s Joe Biden,” Biden campaign spokesman Michael Tyler told Fox News.
