SARATOGA SPRINGS — The 156th Belmont Stakes, the third leg of the Triple Crown, is set to take place this Saturday at Saratoga Race Course. Despite the participation of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winners, the morning-line favorite is Sierra Leone, the Derby runner-up, with odds of 9-5.
Sierra Leone, trained by Chad Bown, will be starting from post position 9 in a field of 10 horses. This field also includes Mystik Dan, the Derby winner, and Seize the Grey, the Preakness winner.

Sierra Leone will be ridden by a different jockey from the Derby, switching from Gaffalione to Prat. The horse’s bit will also be slightly adjusted to give the rider more control.
Brown believes that the post position won’t significantly impact the race, given the 10-horse field and the long straightaway before the first turn. He said, “Flavien should be able to survey the inside into that first turn and hopefully pick his spot. If he breaks cleanly and picks where he wants to go, it’ll come down to a clean trip and if he runs his ‘A’ race on Saturday.”
Sierra Leone’s training suggests that he will be in top form for Saturday’s race. He narrowly missed out on winning the Derby, with Mystik Dan clinching the win on the rail while Sierra Leone battled with Forever Young in the middle of the track.
Brown stated, “It was something that we moved past pretty quickly, and got him up here and started to work toward the Belmont. I never had any consideration to go to the Preakness after the horse lost that heartbreaker. The horse has been super-cooperative as far as working and training exactly when I want and how I want. He’s a real professional that way.”
Brown had also been preparing Tuscan Gold for the Belmont, but the horse will not participate in the race after failing to meet Brown’s expectations in Saturday’s breeze.
“I didn’t want to run him in a race of this magnitude unless he was 100%,” Brown said. “We’re going to have to take a step back and re-evaluate that horse.”
Mystik Dan will be the only horse to have participated in all three legs of the Triple Crown. Seize the Grey also ran on the Derby card, winning the Grade II Pat Day Mile.
Kenny McPeek, Mystik Dan’s trainer, didn’t finalize his decision on the Belmont until the last minute. He had Thorpedo Anna, the Kentucky Oaks winner, as a backup plan in case Mystik Dan didn’t run. However, Thorpedo Anna is now a strong favorite in the Grade I Acorn on Friday.
“That’s why we watched him real close and didn’t make a decision abruptly,” McPeek said. “He’s been ultra-consistent. He’s had the same patterns after workouts, after races. His eating patterns have been the same, so that makes you feel better. We’ve been very consistent with checking his bloodwork and making sure he’s not dehydrated or fatigued.”
David Aragona, the New York Racing Association linemaker, has named Mindframe as the second choice on the morning line, despite the fact that Mindframe is making his stakes debut. He is ahead of the Derby and Preakness winners.
Mindframe is one of three Belmont horses trained by Todd Pletcher. The others are Antiquarian, the Grade III Peter Pan winner, and Protective, who is still a maiden after four career starts. The Wine Steward, a New York-bred horse, is coming off a close second to Antiquarian in the Peter Pan and a second to Encino in the Lexington. The Wine Steward was the betting favorite in both races.
