Friesen Triumphs in Thunder on the Thruway Series: A Speedy Recap

After splitting last Saturday’s double modified features, Stewart Friesen and Jack Lehner were looking for a second straight modified feature win Saturday at Fonda Speedway.

Lehner overtook early-race leader JaMike Sowle on lap 12 and built a solid lead as the race ran under green-flag conditions. Friesen moved into a distant second a lap later and got the break he was looking for with six laps to go when Craig Hanson, who was running fourth, slowed to a stop on the front stretch, bringing out the caution.

A second caution on the restart switched the field from a side-by-side to a single-file restart, setting the stage for a shootout over the final laps.

Friesen built momentum in the high line, running wheel-to-wheel with Lehner before gaining an advantage on the outside of turn four and held on for the 30-lap, $4,000-to-win Thunder on the Thruway series victory and his 92nd career win at the Track of Champions.

“I thought when we went single file on the restart that it was game over,” Friesen said in victory lane. “Jack [Lehner] gave me just enough room outside of him, I love the Nelsons [owners of the No. 85 Lehner drives at Fonda], they are a great race team, but it didn’t matter tonight we were going after it. Growing up around this sport, I love it to death, I love this track and I’m real lucky to call this place my home.”

Also posting back-to-back victories Saturday night were Kenny Gates (Pro Stock) and Brendan Gibbons (Sportsman), while Rocco Constantino raced to his second win of the season in the 15-lap Limited Sportsman feature and the Four Cylinder feature wins went to Josh Beals (SOHC) and Kerrie Hollenback (DOHC).

With a redraw for the modified feature, Sowle and Lehner brought the modified field to the green, with Friesen and Hanson making up the second row.

Sowle set the pace for the opening 11 laps before Lehner slipped past, and then a lap later, Friesen also got past, putting Sowle in a battle for third with Hanson and Jessica Friesen.

Lehner encountered lapped traffic and was able to keep a couple of cars between himself and Stewart Friesen before the lap 25 cautions.

Stewart Friesen put his right-side tires in the outside racing surface that was tilled prior to the start of the modified feature, found enough bite to get past Lehner exiting turn four and hold on for the victory.

“That was something right there,” Stewart Friesen said. “Great track prep before the race gave us just enough there at the top in one and two. Kudos to Craig [Hanson] and Brett [Fonda Speedway promoter Brett Deyo] for working on it and getting it pretty damn racy there.”

Rocky Warner and Alex Yankowski also made the most of the late-race restart to finish third and fourth, respectively, with Jessica Friesen fifth. Michael Maresca, Bobby Hackel IV, Sowle, Dave Constantino and Ryan Odasz round out the top 10.

Luck of the draw put Gates on the pole of the 20-lap Pro Stock feature with AJ Walters alongside.

Gates took the point at the drop of the green with Walters in close pursuit. The duo distanced themselves from the third-place battle between Nick Stone, Ivan Joslin and Jason Morrison.

Walters, who was involved in a hard crash Friday night at Utica-Rome, slowed on lap 11, bringing out the caution and moving Stone, Joslin and Morrison into striking distance.

Gates was up to the challenge, holding off Stone and Joslin for the Thunder on the Thruway feature win.

The victory was also Gates’ 95th at Fonda Speedway and 99th of his career.

Stone finished second, followed by Joslin, Morrison and Jim Normoyle.

Dylan Madsen grabbed the early lead in the 25-lap Crate 602 Sportsman feature over Michael Kalkbrenner.

Gibbons pulled into second on a lap three restart, with Butchie Irwin following in fourth.

Gibbons made his move for the lead exiting turn two when he and Madsen closed on the lapped car of Pat Mann. Madsen drove to the outside of Mann, while Gibbons drove the inside and out dragged Madsen into turn three.

Payton Talbot used a lap 21 restart to move past Madsen into second, but ran out of time as Gibbons crossed under the checkers for his second straight and second career 602 Sportsman feature win.

Tanner Warner rallied to finish third, followed by Brian Calabrese and Madsen.

Constantino utilized his front-row starting spot to win out in a race-long battle with Jeff Boblin. Lance Hill finished third, with Timmy Wilmot fourth and Bobby Rhinehardt fifth.

The Limited Sportsman feature was red-flagged with four laps to go when Ben Balzer clipped the inside wall in turn four and flipped multiple times. Balzer was uninjured in the accident.

The 12-lap four-cylinder feature was also red flagged when the cars of Wayne Russell Jr, Slappy White and Hayleigh Gates came together, sending Gates sliding up the track in turn one, collecting Ken Hollenbeck’s car. Hollenbeck made hard contact with the wall and flipped. Hollenbeck, who recorded his 100th win in the division a week ago, was uninjured in the accident.

Josh Beals went on to record his first career victory, with Kerrie Hollenbeck, Ken’s brother, second, Jay Ingersoll third, White fourth and Len St. Andrews fifth.

MARC JOHNSON WINS MALTA FEATURE

Marc Johnson utilized restart opportunities to move from his 12th starting spot to the lead and pull off for his third modified feature win of the season Friday night at Albany-Saratoga Speedway.

Neil Stratton set the early pace before relinquishing the point to Johnson two laps after a lap 23 restart. As Johnson pulled away, Stratton then found himself defending the runner-up spot over the final laps from Matt DeLorenzo.

Johnson hit the finish line well ahead of the field for his third win of the season, while Stratton held on to beat DeLorenzo for the runner-up spot. James Meehan and Ryan McCartney rounded out the top five. Jack Lehner, Peter Britten, Jack Speshock, Justin Stone and Mike Mahaney completed the second five.

Tim Hartman Jr. powered his way from his 15th starting spot and moved to the lead with three laps to go to pick up his second straight and fifth Sportsman victory of the season. David Baranowski Jr. placed second, followed by Michael Wagner Fitzgerald, Scott Duell and Dylan Madsen.

Beau Ballard used lapped traffic as a pick to slip past Rob Yetman and record his third Pro Stock victory of the season. Yetman finished second, with Kim Duell third.

Three was also the magic number for Beau Ballard, who picked up his third victory of the season in the 25-lap pro stock feature, which paid $1,000 to win through sponsorship from A-Z Property Management. Ballard, who is running a full schedule at Albany-Saratoga for the first time, took the lead away from Rob Yetman on lap 19 when the leaders were in traffic. Ballard used the slower car of Russ Alloggio as a pick in the third turn and hit the starting-finish line with the lead. Yetman finished second, with Kim Duell third, Rich Crane fourth and Jason Casey fifth.

Jimmy Duncan picked up his third Street Stock victory of the year over Chris Stalker and Al Relyea, while Tanner Coon collected his third Limited Sportsman feature win of the season over James Galarneau and Dakota Green.

The scheduled four-cylinder feature was rained out and will be rescheduled.

HAAS WIN ‘THE COMMANDER’ 8000

Brett Haas used a late-race pass of Andy Bachetti and celebrated with promoter Howie Commander after winning the 33-lap, $8,000-to-win “The Commander” 8000 honoring the promoter’s 80th birthday Saturday night at Lebanon Valley Speedway.

Bachetti finished second in the big-block feature, with John Virgilio, Kilby Schroder and Kyle Sheldon posting top-five finishes in the event.

Bachetti did get the victory in the 358-modified feature over Joey Coppola, Haas, Sheldon and Lorne Browe.

Tim Hartman Jr. continued his win streak at The Valley, beating out Michael Sabia and Karl Barned to remain undefeated on the season in the 602 Sportsman division.

SHEPPARD TOPS MODIFIEDS AT U-R

“Super” Matt Sheppard celebrated his birthday with his seventh modified feature win of the season Friday night at Utica-Rome Speedway.

Sheppard started 10th and took the lead on a lap 14 restart, survived a series of late-race restarts and held off a charge by Tim Fuller for the victory. Alex Yankowski finished third, with Anthony Perrego and Bobby Hackel IV finishing fourth and fifth, respectively.

Brian Calabrese claimed his first career victory at Utica-Rome in the Crate 602 Sportsman main event.

Calabrese passed Payton Talbot and led the final five laps to claim the victory.

Matt Janczuk also got by Talbot for second, with Zack Welch and David Hackett Jr. rounding out the top five.

Luke Horning picked up his second straight and third win of the season in the caution-marred Pro Stock feature.

Bret Belden followed Horning under the checkers, with Devon Camenga, Michael Achzet, and Jim Normoyle rounding out the top five.

Eric Jensen claimed his second win of the season with the Limited Sportsman main, while Rudy King Jr. (DOHC) and Wayne Russell Jr. (SOHC) won the four-cylinder features.

Brett Putnam (All-Star) and Addisyn Roger (Junior) defended home turf on the national weekend for the Northeast Region for the slingshots.

Putnam topped an impressive 23 car All-Star field, and Roger was the head of the 13-car class in the Juniors.

Utica-Rome will host the annual “Richie Evans Remembered 61” Thursday. The Short Track Super Series event for modifieds will go 61-laps for $6,100-to-win. The STSS Crate 602 Sportsman are also on tap for a 25-lap, $2,061-to-win feature.

CAMARA WINS AT DEVIL’S BOWL

After a 13-year hiatus from racing, Dave Camara returned to racing in the 2023 season in a big-block modified at Fonda Speedway.

Camara switched Saturday night venues and divisions to compete in the Sportsman Modified division at Devil’s Bowl Speedway.

Saturday night, Camara returned to victory lane, starting fourth and driving to the front in the 30-lap Sportsman Modified feature at The Bowl.

Tanner Siemons followed Camara, with Tim LaDuc third, Joey Scarborough fourth and Brian Whittemore fifth.

David Arnold returned to compose the film’s score, continuing his work from the previous Bond
films. The opening parkour chase, the high-stakes poker game, and the dramatic final confrontation in Venice are all meticulously designed to keep audiences

more for Vesper than just the animal lust that originally characterized his approach to her, and resolves to

to give Le Chiffre all the money he needs.

former development DB9s for use as DBS look-a-like stunt cars for the
scene involving the car crash. The same computer system also controlled the exterior model,
which the effects team had built to one-third scale to film the building eventually collapsing into the Venetian canal.

The rig, weighing some 90 tons, incorporated electronics with hydraulic valves that were closely controlled by computer because of the dynamic movement within the system on its two axes.
The sinking of the Venetian house at the climax of the
