SCHENECTADY — The Basketball League (TBL), a professional basketball organization, is set to extend its reach to Schenectady with the introduction of the New York Phoenix.
The newly formed team will be showcasing their skills at the Armory Studios NY, previously known as the Washington Avenue Armory.
According to TBL president Dave Magley, the Phoenix is set to ignite a friendly rivalry with the Albany Patroons, located in the neighboring Albany County. The Phoenix is scheduled to make their debut in 2025.
While Legere Restoration is the owner of Armory Studios NY, they will not be the owners of the team. The official team owner will be unveiled at a press conference scheduled for 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the arena, Magley revealed.
The TBL, a professional minor-league, boasts approximately 40 franchises scattered across the nation.
The 2024 season kicked off in March, with the playoffs extending into the latter part of June.
“We’re on a mission to grow stronger,” stated Magley, who will be present at the Tuesday press conference. Discover Schenectady made the exciting announcement on Monday that a new professional sports team will be playing all of its home games at Armory NY Studios.
Constructed in 1936, Armory Studios NY is situated at 125 Washington Ave. It has been the venue for various sporting events, including SUNY Schenectady basketball games and boxing matches.
In addition to the Patroons, the New York Phoenix will be joining the ranks of the Adirondack Thunder of the ECHL (formerly the East Coast Hockey League) and the Tri-City ValleyCats of the Pioneer League, further bolstering the minor-league pro teams in the Capital Region.
A firm has been commissioned by investors to design an 8,000-seat stadium in downtown Albany, which is proposed to be the home ground for a potential NextPro Major League Soccer team.
The construction of the new Mohawk Harbor Event Center is on track to be completed in time for the commencement of the Union College men’s and women’s hockey teams’ 2025-26 season in October 2025.
